How Neurons Work

Neurons are the fundamental units of the nervous system — electrically excitable cells that transmit information across the body at remarkable speed through electrical and chemical signals.

The human brain contains ~86 billion neurons, each forming up to 10,000 synaptic connections. Myelinated axons can transmit signals at up to 120 m/s through saltatory conduction — jumping between nodes of Ranvier.

01
Dendrites Receive InputDendrites detect neurotransmitters released across synapses from neighboring neurons, converting chemical signals to electrical ones.
02
Soma IntegratesThe cell body sums all incoming signals. If the total exceeds the threshold (~-55 mV), an action potential fires.
03
Action Potential PropagatesA wave of sodium and potassium ion exchange travels down the axon. Myelin sheath enables saltatory conduction — dramatically speeding transmission.
04
Neurotransmitters ReleasedAt axon terminals, Ca²⁺ influx triggers vesicles to release neurotransmitters (dopamine, serotonin, GABA, etc.) into the synaptic cleft.

The Human Brain

The human brain — ~1.5 kg of densely interconnected neurons — is the most complex structure in the known universe, governing thought, memory, emotion, movement, and every bodily function simultaneously.

The cerebral cortex is divided into four lobes with specialized functions. The cerebellum coordinates fine motor control; the brain stem governs automatic vital functions. Connectivity between regions enables consciousness itself.

CB
CerebellumCoordinates balance and fine motor control — holds 10% of brain volume but 50% of all neurons.
